Naming Reprise

Naming Reprise

So, you're curious to know the original name for Reprise?

I always love hearing creators' stories about naming their company. The popular podcast company Gimlet Media has a whole episode dedicated to it. We listened to this recording in one of my FIT classes for Entrepreneurship, where about half the class had a name that they thought of easily, while the others were still racking their brains furiously for something that would work. And from what I've heard that's the way it goes for most entrepreneurs. Some people choose to make up a word (Google, Uber) and just go with it, while others change it a few times (Nike was originally Blue Ribbon Sports).

I'm lucky to say that the name Reprise came to me sort of easily - it was a bit of a light bulb moment. When I first came up with the idea, the name was actually ReWork. I loved the play on words that you could do with "Re" that went with fitness like Re-Do, Re-Play, Re-Shape, Re-Construct...I had a whole PowerPoint full of ideas.

I can't remember exactly what led me to scrap ReWork, but I think it might have had to do with the fact that it sounds a lot like WeWork and didn't quite evoke the fitness feel I was looking for. It also wasn't super unique and I didn't think it was going to stand out like I wanted it to.

I started doing some more brainstorming and realized that one of my favorite parts of working out is always the music. I fell in love with boxing because the Box n Beats class I go to always plays the best R&B and Hip Hop music. Part of what I really wanted to incorporate into Reprise was my love of Hip Hop, working out AND sustainability, which I didn't feel like had been done before.

After a bit of Thesaurus digging, I fell in love with the term Reprise. In music, Reprise is a repeated phrase - it felt perfect for a company that uses a closed loop (constantly recycled) manufacturing process and promotes repeated wears of each piece.

So, without overthinking it too much, and since Reprise Activewear was an available domain and social handle - it became the official name of the company. It's fun to reflect back and see what Reprise would have been if I hadn't taken so much time to refine my idea and narrow in on my vision. I'm thankful for this time and where it's taken me to develop a much more solid brand!
